The Looming Decision of Kyrie Irving

After an avertible loss to the lottery-bound Orlando Magic, a lonesome Kyrie Irving sat at his locker in frustration. For many, this is a display of Irving's passionate desire to win. But as a Celtic fan, this frustration brings worry and attention to Kyrie's looming free agency decision.

The Boston Celtics entered the 2018-2019 season with sky-high (and possibly inflated) expectations following their near-finals run. Many believed that an injury-free Boston squad with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward under fold could possibly be the ones to dethrone the Warriors from their historic run. Although, as of right now that seems like overly optimistic thinking as this year's Boston squad has looked far from title-ready.

Boston currently sits at 25-17, placing them at an underwhelming 5th in the east despite their stand-out depth and array of young talent. While the Celtics have been reasonably successful at home, their struggles have come on the road as they sport a 10-12 away record. 5-time all-star, Kyrie Irving, is definitely not content with Boston's underwhelming start to the season. "We can't be comfortable being a fifth (seed)" Irving told reporters. "I'm not comfortable with it."

Irving finished with 25 points in a 105-103 loss to the Orlando Magic

By season end, Irving will be an unrestricted free agent and be free to put pen to paper with whichever team throws him a max-deal. For Celtic's fans, Boston's unexpected struggles are scary as Irving's want to not only win but compete for a title could lead him elsewhere come this summer.

"The young guys don't know what it takes to be a championship level team. What it takes every day." Irving would say in response to the Celtic's cold stretch. "And if they think it is hard now, what do they think it will be like when we're trying to get to the Finals?"

If any Celtic knows a thing or two about being a championship-calibre team, it would be 2016 NBA champion Kyrie Irving who averaged 27.1 points per contest while playing Robin to LeBron James' Batman. Kyrie's lack of confidence in his teammates' readiness to contend for the title could play a large factor in Kyrie's inevitable decision to either stay or skip town.

While an impressive second-half of the season followed by a deep playoff run may convince Kyrie to commit long-term, Boston's early woes could be a catalyst towards Kyrie reconsidering his future with the organisation.
